Shipping pottery can be a challenging endeavor, and we strongly encourage you to seek an experienced pack and ship business to help you send your pieces to their final destination. Though it can be costly, proper packing can be the best insurance you can buy. When shipping stoneware you must follow several precautions. Here is a general list of suggestions:
All larger or lidded items must be double-boxed, and small pots, though they can be single-boxed, should have a thick blanket of bubble wrap for cushioning. Very small, light pieces require less caution with packaging, but please remember even small pieces are fragile. Ensure that edges of pots are well separated from the box, and cannot shift to the outer perimeter of the packing. Allow plenty of room for plentiful bubble wrap and packing peanuts. Use new, sturdy boxes as old ones can lose structural integrity.
Within the inside box, all pieces must be adequately wrapped and separated with bubble wrap, ensuring each piece cannot bump into adjacent pieces (including lids), no matter the jarring action. Pay special attention to vulnerable protrusions such as handles and spouts. Don’t skimp with the bubble wrap. Make sure edges of pots cannot be felt between the bubbles. Tape each wrapped piece with packing tape so it can’t escape its protective blanket. Fill the remainder of the inside box with peanuts for a snug fit to avoid shifting.
The inside box must fit within the outside box with NO LESS than 2” of packing peanuts all around it, including above and below. This is very important for its shock-absorbent properties.
Securely tape the box shut, running a continuous band of tape around the entire box in both directions. For oversized boxes use multiple bands in each direction. Be sure to also tape the exposed edge seams.
Since pottery is both heavy and brittle, the packing may seem excessive, but survival of your pieces depends on taking these extra precautions. (Have you been to a baggage claim area lately?)
